The cost of a sample

Over at “Please scoop me”, Jonathan Chang analyses the optimal number of samples one should use to estimate an expectation, when you assume that obtaining samples incurs cost.

Someone should write a paper looking at the implications of this type of analysis for distribution ray tracing and Metropolis light transport.
